Margo Pfeiff

A walking safari with Huw Jones as guide made me fall in love with Africa. Not only because of his confidence and competence in the bush, his ability to spot creatures and get visitors up close for a look, and teach about the local culture, but because of his relaxed nature and great, wacky sense of humour. Africa is clearly embedded in this fellow’s bones and he spreads his passion to everyone around him. Huw is not just a guide; he’s part of the experience…

Award-winning, Montréal, QC-based freelance writer and photographer Margo Pfeiff’s work has appeared in The Los Angeles Times, Lonely Planet guidebooks, Reader’s Digest, GEO,enRoute, explore, Canadian Geographic, Outpost, The Walrus, up here, San Francisco Chronicle, National Post and The Globe and Mail.

Sean Hemingway

Huw Jones and I worked together as photographic safari guides for Norman Carr in the South Luangwa Valley, Zambia in 1995.  Already at that time, Huw was one of the best safari guides in the Valley.  Whether out in the bush by car or on foot or sitting by the camp fire at night, being on safari with Huw was a magical, soul-enriching experience. Back in the golden age of safaris, which my grandfather wrote about in Green Hills of Africa, he knew to seek out and hire the best guide possible because it is an essential component of a successful safari. I would say that is more true than ever today.

Sean Hemingway is a curator of Greek and Roman art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.  He has written widely about ancient art and is the author of a novel, The Tomb of Alexander (London 2012).  The grandson of Ernest Hemingway, he has also edited four books of his grandfather's writing including most recently, A Farewell to Arms. The Hemingway Library Edition (New York and London 2012).

Richard Madden

Huw Jones is a one-off. There are many excellent safari guides out there who are very professional and who can offer a great experience. But Huw will give you more. Much more. His instinctive empathy with both his clients and everything that is going on around him in the bush will turn an already unique experience into an unforgettable one. Huw's skill is to reflect the excitement of his guests and to find the animals and experiences they are most interested in, while at the same time giving them the benefit of his wisdom and experience in a manner that is always exciting and fresh. His understanding and knowledge of the bush is second to none and his great charm and good humour are infectious. It would be very difficult to recommend Huw Jones too highly.
